Chapter 23

Nick’s phone rang, so he looked at the caller identification screen before answering. The thought of this caller made him laugh, so he pressed talk and put the phone to his ear. “Dr. Mac. What a nice surprise for you to call. Do you need me to counsel you?” Mac was a good friend, having helped Nick with his depression a little less than a year earlier.

Mac laughed. “Sure. Where’s your couch?”

Nick laughed at him. “In the parking lot. We’re too filled up right now, so we have to go outside.”

“You’re in a pleasant mood,” Mac said. “What’s goin’ on?”

“Well, my patients are all going to live. That’s a major bonus. Travis has been sent to the third floor, so feel free to talk to him. Sammy is awake and doing great. He’s six, so feel free to talk to him, too. His mom died, but his dad’s going to make it, we think. Two of Sammy’s aunts are here most of the time to help with him, so Debra doesn’t have to adopt him.”

“Wait. Debra—the woman having triplets with a kid already at home—was gonna adopt a six-year-old?”

“Yes. She was going to use him for a babysitter.”

Mac laughed. “That’s like a soap opera over there. I see I’m gonna have more people to talk to. I was gettin’ lonely.”

“We can’t have that. Did you call me about your loneliness? Step into my office in the parking lot and we’ll talk about it.”

He laughed again. “No, actually. I was supposed to see Isabel, but she cancelled. Dr. Boone set up the appointment for her.”

“I see. I don’t know much about that.” Why would Mac call him about Isabel anyway?

“I figured you didn’t know yet. She put you down as her contact person, in case she can’t be reached. Also, she said you can know all of her information.”

“She did? I didn’t know that.” That was odd. Why him and not her sisters?

“Yes, she did. I really want to talk to her after speaking with Dr. Boone. I suspect a few things that’ll need a medical doctor’s help, I think. Can you help me with her? Dr. Boone doesn’t like being contacted after hours, but since you’re a doctor and also Isabel’s contact, I thought maybe you could help.”

“Sure. I’d love to. What do you want me to do?”

Mac sighed. “She’s avoiding me, I think. I want to go over to her place and have her talk to me. I don’t want to go alone, because that’s just not right. But with you there, it’ll make it easier.”

“You do realize she and I are dating.”

Mac chuckled. “I heard that through the grapevine.”

“She also doesn’t like talking about herself.”

“I figured. Can you and will you help me? I just want to confirm something I think may be true. Dr. Boone gave me her file. I’m seein’ things that are really concerning—and I’m not even a medical doctor. I’d like you to look at it with her and me present, to see if I’m off base.
